Israel-Hamas Conflict: Opinion of the World


The War

On October 7th, Hamas militants attacked from Gaza to civilian Israelis. They murdered 1323+ Israelis and 248 people was kidnapped, 7,266+ wounded. After this unlawful and terroristic attack, Israel security forces started a counter-attack. Of course Israel have a right to protect and counter the attacks but they started bombing innocent civilian Palestinians far from Hamas. 14,854+ Palestinian civilians has killed since the Israel's counter attack. Especially women, children and UN workers has killed. On October 27th, Israel started ground military operation. Like UN, organisations was said this ground operation will be a bloodshed and Hamas have a dozens of tunnels on the underground. Before the operation, Israel wanted from Palestinian people to evacuate the east of the Gaza. Dozens of Palestinians flew to the west of Gaza. Israel forces encircled Hamas militants on the east side of Gaza. On 24th November, belligerents agreed a ceasefire meditating with Qatar. The ceasefire ended on December 1th.  


Opinion of the World

  • United States: US President Biden said they'll support Israel "rock solid and unwavering".  Compared Hamas with the ISIS. Pentagon said "Israel has no limits to use American weapons".  By authorisation of US Defence Secretary Austin, aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford, cruiser USS Normandy and four destroyers deployed to Eastern Mediterranean. US Air Force extended plane filo in the region. US State Secretary Blinken and President Biden visited Israel. Majority of Americans supporting an ceasefire, "US should be a mediator". After Israel announced plans to start ground operation, Biden administration pressed Israel to delay ground invasion plans. After Israel ground operation started on 27th October, US supported efforts of Qatar to ceasefire for saving hostages. Some groups protested US's policy in the US. Left wing of the Democrats called for a ceasefire.  After temporary ceasefire declared between Israel and Hamas, US government "welcomed" this decision. 
  • China: They have a neutral stand of this conflict. Chinese government urged relevant parties to "remain calm, exercise restraint and immediately end the hostilities to protect civilians and avoid further deterioration of the situation." Israel criticized China because China doesn't condemned Hamas. China Foreign Ministry spokesperson said "we hope to see is the two countries [Israel and Palestine] living together in peace." 
  • EU: European Commission President von der Leyen called the attacks "carried out by Hamas terrorists against Israel", "Israel has the right to defend itself against such heinous attacks". Flag of Israel raised on the EU buildings. EU Enlargement Commissioner Varhelyi said EU will suspend aid to Palestinians. This announcement is condemned by some EU states like Spain, Belgium, Ireland and Luxembourg. After this condemn, EU officials stated the humanitarian aid will continue. EU welcomed temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. 
  • UK: UK unanimously supported Israel.
  • Russia: Like China, Russia have a neutral stand. "This conflict needs to be solved by diplomatic means".  
  • Ukraine: Ukraine supported to Israel. "Israel’s right to self-defense is unquestionable", Zelensky, President of Ukraine said. 
  • Turkey: They are mostly neutral. After attack, Foreign Ministry said: "We attach high importance to the restoration of calm in the region as soon as possible, and strongly condemn the loss of civilian lives. We underline that acts of violence and associated escalations will not benefit anyone, and call on the parties to act with restraint and avoid impulsive steps." After Israel's counter attacks, in his party's (AKP) group talk, Turkish President Erdoğan called Hamas "a mujahideen organisation". Turkey welcomed ceasefire and congratulated Qatar for their meditator role. Government officials said they helped Qatar for a ceasefire. 
  • Iran: As main supporter of Hamas, Iran welcomed Hamas's attacks to civilians. Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson denied claims Iran is involved in Hamas' attack. 
  • Arabic Countries        
    • Saudi Arabia: They have a neutral position. "The Kingdom[Saudi Arabia] calls for an immediate halt to the escalation between the two sides, the protection of civilians, and restraint." Saudi Foreign Ministry said. They welcomed ceasefire.
    • Qatar: They have a neutral position. "The State of Qatar expresses its deep concern over the developments in Gaza Strip and calls on all parties to de-escalate, and exercise maximum restraint." They also said "Israel is solely responsible" for attack of the Hamas. They meditated a temporary ceasefire between sides.
    • UAE: As other Arabic countries, they have a neutral position.

Subjectivity: Are Cop 28 Climate Summit's Final Agreement Effective?

     Reasons of the climate change. COP 28 summit is over. But it's not effective  for curtailing climate change. Why? Let's see.  I'm not going to write summit start to end. To summarize, It has started with too many scandals, although some improvement achieved. 100 states has supported phasing out fossil fuels, fossil fuel firstly agreed as a source of climate change first time in final agreement in COP summits. But I don't think this is enough. Firstly, I's been used and it'll continued to use by petrol states and petrol companies for greenwashing. Secondly, It's only advisory. Some agreements can be reached between states, but they are not checked whether compliance is made or not and no punishment for violator states. There is need a check mechanism for countries, to control they are doing what they have promised. Third problem is the final agreement negotiations.
